Use of Sustainable Materials

Our products are woven using ropes, that are twined from waste including textile and multi layer plastic and natural materials like jute and banana fibre that are locally found in the region; contributing to a circular economy.


Cotton Cords

Black and White ropes made from waste cotton fibres are locally available in hardware shops in our region. We work with a natural dyer to colour these ropes for our indoor furniture. 


Jute Fibre

Natural fibre jute ropes are locally available in our region which are tensile, and are great for a natural look for our indoor and outdoor furniture.  


MLP Plastic Waste

We purchase ropes made from multi layer packaging waste locally available in our region, which is made by local rope making units in the area. They convert trimmings of industrial food packaging waste, leftover from flexi-packaging units that make wrappers for FMCG products. Great for indoor and outdoor use.


Textile Waste

Excess discarded cloth waste ropes are made using the mechanism of Gandhi's spinning wheel, where we have 'invented' a simple indigenous machinery at village level operated by our women to twine long shreds of cloth strips into usable bright ropes. 

Rope Making Process & Sustainability 

How do we calculate our sustainability?   Each SSF product is weighed carefully to calculate the amount of waste/natural fibre ropes used to weave our products, so our customers are aware of their contribution to a circular economy, and a reduction in their carbon footprint. An average SSF products is made from 6.5 kgs of waste/natural ropes. 

Ropes from Textile Waste

Research by the Bureau of International Recycling shows that rescuing a single Kg of used clothing from landfill can help save up to 3.6 kgs of CO2 emissions. The waste textile and cotton ropes used to weave each product is multiplied by 3.6, resulting in our Co2 savings.

Ropes from Multi Layer Plastic Packaging Waste

The WHO Global Challenges Report states that for every 1 kg of recycled plastics, the saving is 1.5 kg of CO2. So we help reduce your carbon footprint by helping you consume responsibly, while generating employment for women from rural communities across India. The waste MLP rope used to weave each product is multiplied by 1.5, resulting in our Co2 savings.
